What Do We Do?
Skyline Decorating is a commercial, union painting and wall covering contractor
known for its high level of service and attention to detail. Opened in 2002, Skyline
has grown steadily by consistently choosing an emphasis on quality over profit. The
result is....we have been very profitable!
Why Hire us?
The reason people hire us is because of our people. Our field personnel are the
best tradesmen in Chicago. They are highly skilled and motivated, well schooled in
safety, and are not satisfied until the project quality exceeds the customer's
expectations. They do that by doing it right the first time and then checking their
work (just in case). Our office personnel are also some of the best in Chicago. They
take a proactive approach to managing painting projects by identifying and solving
problems before they really become a problem on the job site (when it is too late).
Just In!
We are happy to say we have been awarded several attractive tenant jobs. They
include many Northwest Memorial Hospital relocation jobs by Skender Interiors,
United Conveyor by ICG, IBM SPSS by Pepper Construction, and some various
build outs at Robert Morris College for W.E. O'neil Construction.
We have also been awarded a historic tenant build out and renovation for a member
of the Pritzker family by Bulley and Andrews at 104 S. Michigan. The office name is
Tawani (acronym for children's initials) and is located in the 104 S. Michigan
property. We are stripping all of the existing stained wood trim and refinishing with
techniques used by painters 100 years ago.
Skyline is also currently ramping up production at the Garlands of Barrington,
Building D. 85 private residences are under contract with Pepper Construction and
are being turned over to Skyline to decorate at a pace of 4 per week. At 3,000 sf +
per residence and a 5 star quality level, the challenge is just what we like.

Sustainable Practices Everyday
Skyline has completed over ten LEED certified projects to include HSBC's 600,000
s.f. North American headquarters as its first. While it has been a challenge to
retrain our field person to select and use all low or zero VOC products, we have
found that it has been so successful at reducing our generation of hazardous waste,
we have adopted all low VOC water based products as our standard line up. This
has allowed us to eliminate the use of solvents. For cleaning oily pipes, we are
using vinegar and for stripping old paint, orange and lemon based products. As part
of our lease renewal, we negotiated the replacement of the landlord's 30 year old
furnace with a new, more energy efficient one. We also asked for and the landlord
was generous enough to replace our old overhead dock door with an insulated,
better fitting one. Paying rent on time has it's benefits. We are looking forward to
lower energy bills this winter.
Is the Worst Over?
Certainly, for those who build buildings from the ground up, many years of struggle
lay ahead. We have seen our sales plummet from over 1 million a month in the
beginning of 2009 to less than $400,000 by the end of 2009. Just as bad, most jobs
of substance were being awarded below cost. However, we are currently bidding
interior projects at an activity level similar to the days prior to the great recession.
We have also began to see prices rise to at least enough to cover overhead. We
have even had to buy new scaffolds, ladders and tools to equip our new jobs. So, it
appears for now the light at the end of the tunnel is daylight and not a train.
